  1. That’s about the level of religious belief (half or more) that I can remember coming up in other surveys, and my own observations are similar. There was a great old line that some boys become physicists because of trouble with their crystal radio kits and others because of trouble with their god. The line is meant as a compliment among the more philosophically inclined scientists, but it also acknowledges that most of the action in science is by people not looking for a worldview, but who just think doing science is pretty interesting stuff. This is going back a decade, but there was some survey showing that atheism is much, much more prevalent among members of the National Academy of Science than it is among scientists generally. I’ve speculated that atheism is probably also more widespread among Fortune 500 CEOs than it is among average businessmen. No man can serve two masters.
